chief minister Bhagwant Mann on Sunday ordered an inquiry into an incident at
Chandigarh University, expressing his sorrow after reports of a video being
recorded of several women students being unlikeable which was made by one of
them. Protests broke out on Chandigarh University Gandhian Campus late Saturday
following rumors that some objectionable videos of several female students were
recorded by a housekeeper and shared with his friends in Shimla.
At

Police
said a video was taken by female students studying at Chandigarh University
showing over 50 girls bathing and changing clothes at a hostel toilet.
Chandigarh University students were protesting, saying the girl had taken the
video in an MMS and shared it with another university student, who then would
upload the video online.
University
authorities dismissed the false and unsubstantiated reports claiming that
videos were made and leaked to social media by different women students from
hostels, and distraught students attempted suicide following this incident.
Police and university authorities dismissed the social media posts claiming
several girls had attempted to commit suicide after the leaked videos. As the
issue has attracted an angry political response, the university authorities
clarified that no videos were found that were offensive, other than one private
video taken by one of the girls she shared with her boyfriend.
After
protests from students Saturday evening, the woman, an MBA student at the
private University, was arrested on Sunday morning by the police for making the
objectionable video. At Mohalis's famous private university, the atmosphere
turned tense at the end of Saturday evening when a hostel-bound student made
lewd videos of fellow students of the girl's other students and made it go
viral on social media via her friends sitting in Shimla, Shimla. Punjab
additional director general of police, Gurpreet Deo, who reached the Chandigarh
university campus to check on the situation following the protests Saturday
evening, told reporters that a female student appeared to share the video of
herself with the young man, while no obscene videos were found of any other
students.
National Commission for Women (NCW) President Rekha Sharma, while citing several media reports and Twitter posts stating that videos were leaked about girls living in a hostel at Chandigarh University and several girls were said to be trying to commit suicide, wrote to Punjab director general of police, to deal with the issue rigorously and without any leniency, and file an FIR against the perpetrators. Taking immediate action on a female student, the authorities registered an FIR under Section 354(C).
